Unit 6 — Simulation-based power analysis
Wednesday 7 October, 12:30–16:00
How often would our proposed experiment detect a specified diet effect? We will reuse the four data generating processes from Unit 5 and examine sample size, assumptions and simulation uncertainty. We will also introduce the group project before autumn break.
No new video, reading or coding is required. Bring your laptop and Week 5 work if available. A working starter and model reminder are provided for every group.
Work in the same four groups of three. We begin with a 30-minute guided reconstruction of Week 5: the design, assumed means, random observations and fitted effects. We then analyse one experiment, repeat it and interpret a baseline power curve. Predict one assumption change in class; compare supplied sensitivity results after class. Keep the pen as the experimental unit and distinguish adding pens from adding simulation repetitions.
Breaks are 13:40–13:55 and 14:55–15:10. Reports are 15:10–15:25; recommendations and sensitivity predictions are 15:25–15:40. At 15:40–15:55 we introduce the group project and week 42 task; 15:55–16:00 is the individual exit question.

There is no class on 14 October during autumn break. Complete the week 42 revision and project-scoping task, capped at 2½ hours per student including Unit 6 consolidation. It replaces the separate 60-minute follow-up assignment. Within the 30-minute revision block, spend 10 minutes on simulation, 10 on supplied sensitivity results and 10 on your model map. Use selected consolidation slides for revision; the older consolidation worksheet remains available for optional further practice.
Bring your one-page group project brief, model map and one question to Unit 7 on 21 October. No new model fitting is required during the break.
